Government Launches Compensation Scheme for LGBT Veterans

Following extensive discussions with LGBT veterans, the government has launched the LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme to compensate those who were impacted by the ban on LGBT personnel serving in the Armed Forces, which was in place between 1967 and 2000.

LGBT veterans who were dismissed or discharged because of their sexual orientation or gender identity will receive a payment of £50,000. They can also apply to have their rank restored and the reason for their discharge amended. Additional payments of up to £20,000 will be available for those who were negatively affected by the ban on LGBT personnel during their time in the Armed Forces.

Payments under the Scheme will be exempt from Income Tax and means-tested benefits.

Guidance on the Scheme, including how to apply for a Financial Recognition Payment, can be found on the government's website.

Non-financial restorative measures are also available to veterans who were affected by the criminal law prohibiting same-sex sexual activity until 1967. Guidance on these measures is also available on the government's website.
